Experience is one of the most precious assets on the Dakar, but it does not offer protection from all risks. In 2015, Jun Mitsuhashi started the event for the 14th time. He was one of the pioneers of the Japanese contingent on the rally. Like his mentor Yoshimasa Sugawara, who led the way in the 1980’s, Jun started out on a motorbike, even finishing 12th in 2002. However, it was especially as one of the masters in the “Production” category, made up of 4x4s very similar to mass-produced models, that Mitsuhashi built his reputation on the Dakar. The leading driver of the official Toyota Autobody team, and a keen surfer in his spare time, has won the title five times, with a best finish in the overall car category standings of 12th in 2011. What’s more, the spectacular crash that millions of spectators witnessed thanks to the on-board camera in his Landcruiser did not prevent him from winning the T2 category once again in 2015. Last year, Jun returned to his first love and completed the Dakar in 56th position behind the handlebars of a KTM.
